Review: Big 4 Hopkins River Holiday Park, Warrnambool

by Silke Elzner

When you are travelling with kids it is sometimes not easy to find suitable accommodation. You will want to find a place to stay that is suitable for kids, but you as adults also don’t want to make compromises in terms of amenities and convenience.

In the past I found that Holiday Parks can be a real treat for families, since they usually come with a variety of facilities that suit both, the grown-ups and the little people. Plus, you don’t even have to bring your own tent or camper van – in a rented cabin you are provided all the basics without having to worry about setting up camp or finding a comfortable sleeping solution.

When we recently visited Warrnambool to explore the region and of course take in the wonders of the magnificent Great Ocean Road, we spent two nights at the Big 4 Hopkins River Holiday Park. It’s a little bit out of town, but since we were driving anyway, this didn’t really matter. The trip to the city centre and the surrounding attractions such as Port Fairy, Tower Hill Reserve and Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is very short with hardly any traffic to speak of.

Pool with water play

The advantage of the location is that you are right on the banks of the beautiful Hopkins River. You just slip through the backdoor of the park and you are already there. Not a river that is suitable for swimming, but the pontoon is perfect for fishing. Since the park is located close to the estuary, you will find here a variety of saltwater and freshwater fish, depending on where you position yourself.

And if you like me don’t usually fish, it is still a romantic place for an early morning walk or to sit and take in the quiet surroundings. It is such a pretty place, the slow flowing river, the ducks in the reeds, the cheeky birds in the trees – perfect to shake off the big city stress and the everyday worries!

Big 4 Hopkins River does come with more than just a pretty location, of course. The kids were so excited to find a big jumping pillow and a playground near our cabin. There is also a mini golf course, tennis courts, go karts, an indoor pool (definitely needed in spring when the weather has not yet warmed up) and a lagoon pool with water slide. There was no way the kids would get bored during our stay.

Old trees and a fishing pier

Our cabin had two bedrooms, one with a big double bed, and another one with two bunk beds, making it suitable for up to six people. All linen and towels were provided, and there was also a TV in the lounge room, and a barbecue on the deck. A nice surprise was the capsule coffee machine – we Aussies do like our coffees fresh!

Cabins in general may not be the height of luxury when travelling, and they may not be furnished with the latest and most modern facilities. The shower may rattle, and the linoleum may come off in corners. There may be scratches on the kitchen benches or mattresses that have lost their firmness over time. But… cleanliness is the most important thing when it comes to staying somewhere overnight. At Big 4 Hopkins River Holiday Park we were impressed with the level of cleanliness both inside the cabin but also outside in the park itself.

A walk around the park revealed some surprising plants and shrubs that I had never seen before. The gardens were meticulously maintained and a joy to look at while the kids powered themselves out at the playground and on the jumping pillow. With a cuppa in hand we could enjoy the last dying rays of light on the deck of our cabin while the kids were having a ball. We knew that this was the sort of family holiday that they would never forget.

Overall, Big 4 Hopkins River proved to be the right choice for our family vacation in Warrnambool. Perfect for a short stay while exploring the regional attractions, to get away from it all, to offer the kids the opportunity for plenty of outdoors play and making new friends.
