Come with me to a beach, our magical beach. Take my hand, follow my lead. The beach I am going to show you is impossible in its existence. Its location is like an error in the matrix, a trick to the eye, a jest of nature.
To find this beach we must be persistent. Ignore the naysayers, break the rules. Park your car here, right behind the no trespassing sign and hope for the best. Follow the path down into the fields, kick some pebbles and jump across the tyre tracks.
And here we are, on our way to Playa de Gulpiyuri, our magical beach.
See the butterflies in the fields, hear the buzz of the bees. Smell the dusty earth as your eyes wander over the meadows. Don’t venture off track, just follow the path deeper and deeper into the countryside. Feel the warmth of the land, hear the tiny birds in the bushes. Can you already smell it, the salt of the sea?
It’s a turn to the right and a turn to the left. A little climb up a hill and another turn. And there it is, in the middle of the fields: our magical beach.
Playa de Gulpiyuri in Spanish Asturia, is a land-locked beach. Can you see it there, in all its beauty, entirely misplaced, surrounded by pastures? The green sea water, as it gently washes ashore onto a sandy beach? Framed by the rocks that look as if Dalí had placed them there himself. Where do they come from, these waves, and where will they go?
But listen closely – the thunder that you hear is the angry sound of monstrous waves. They don’t belong here, in this magical place. For those, you need to venture further. Climb up the hill for another one hundred metres, past the magical beach, our little hidden gem, and further on. Just follow the perfume of the sea.
There, just a couple of metres further, is the real sea. The wild and unspoilt coast. Kilometres of rocky limestone cliffs, standing guard against the forces of nature.
And our little beach? It is fed the water of the Cantabrian Sea through a maze of underground tunnels. A sinkhole filled with sea water, subjected to the tides of the ocean, surrounded by the stunning beauty of weathered limestone cliffs.
Playa de Gulpiyuri is a hidden gem that I felt I needed to share with you. Thank you for taking my hand and for following me to a world of impossibilities.
