Beautiful Tragic: Achilleion Palace

Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary was a historic figure who was in equal parts beautiful as she was tragic. Her life as female head of one of the most powerful and wealthy courts in Europe came at the cost of her freedom. Whenever possible, Sisi, as she was lovingly called by her closest family, would escape Vienna for the sunny Mediterranean shores. Achilleion Palace was one of her favourite palaces to escape to, and it is not difficult to see why. Explore the house and the grounds, browse through Elisabeth’s private collection of jewellery and furniture, and enjoy the gorgeous views from the terraces. Read more about it in our travel blog post here.

Romantic Harbour Town: Kassiopi

Kassiopi is a pretty town by the bay, where little fishing boats dance on crystal-clear water. Small family-run restaurants around the harbour serve delicious Greek food with a view. After your relaxed harbour front lunch, treat yourself to ice-cream at The Big Bite Store on Main Street and then try the short walk up the hill to the ruined fortress. If you walk a little bit further, all the way to the headland, you will be rewarded with views all the way to Albania. There are also a number of small white pebble beaches to choose from, so make sure you bring along some swimwear.

Corfu Highlight: Canal d’Amour

Sadly, Canal d’Amour is no longer a hidden gem in Corfu, and most people will recognise it as a popular swimming spot. But it is so much more. Canal d’Amour is one of Corfu’s most beautiful natural spaces. It is by the sea, however, don’t just go here because of the beach as you will find that it is rather small and quite busy in summer. Instead, expect to see some of the most beautiful bays in Corfu in this area, deeply indented and enclosed by golden limestone cliffs. Explore the area of the Canal d’Amour and Small Canal d’Amour by walking along the cliffs and enjoy the views of the blue water, the smell of the ocean spray and the beauty of these natural surroundings.

Canal d’Amour is located in Sidari, however this little town is not included in most itineraries. If you still would like to visit this area as part of a private tour, ask your tour guide to take you there: Private Customised Tour of Corfu. (Affiliate Link)

A Garden Eden: Paleokastritsa Monastery

Cover your shoulders and visit one of Corfu’s most stunning monastery, Paleokastritsa Monastery. Surrounded by cypresses, pines and olive trees, it is located on top of a mountain with commanding views of the blue Mediterranean Sea. The monks have created a true Garden Eden inside, where vines heavy with fruit hang from the pergolas and bees provide the busy soundtrack as they are gathering nectar form the thousands of flowers. Inside, visit the pretty Greek Orthodox church with its many silver votivs to the Virgin Mary and see an original olive mill in the small museum. Nearby Paleokastritsa Beach is great for a refreshing dip after your culture lesson. Read more about our experiences at the monastery here.

I am sure you will love the views at the Kaiser’s Throne that extend all the way to Italy and Albania! To your feet you will make out the lovely green valleys of Corfu with the many colourful country houses. Nearby Sunset Restaurant is great for a cup of coffee while enjoying the great views.
