The sun is out, it’s a crisp and bright winter morning, and we have some time to kill. So we park the car in one of the surrounding streets of Balmoral Beach and go for a walk. Balmoral has a reputation for being the beach of the north shore high-society. Some of the most expensive and elegant houses can be found here. Driving around the suburban streets of Mosman feels a bit like being in Beverly Hills. And it’s no wonder why: Balmoral Beach is probably one of the most beautiful harbour beaches you can find in Sydney.
The sand is soft and golden, the water free of rips and big waves – perfect for families with little children. And Balmoral Beach is pretty special too – considering it’s a harbour beach it actually has a clean, open feel as it’s facing the opening of the harbour. It just feels as if Balmoral gets the freshest water right from the big Pacific Ocean on the other side of the harbour heads.
Views from Balmoral Beach are sweeping and outstanding – from Manly to North Head, then South Head and Watsons Bay you can enjoy really good views of one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. For the best views just cross the romantically curved sandstone bridge onto the little headland and find a seat on one of the benches. Take a book, or grab a coffee. Relax.
If you are lucky, you might have some animal encounters too – seabirds drying their feathers in the sun, pelicans feeding with their long beaks in the water, crabs, seashells. An animal encounter of a different kind can be found in the park next to the beach. Meet Billie – the loyal street sweeper’s dog who has been immortalised in a little statue in the park. For 17 years this little dog has been a much loved member of the Balmoral community, so much so that you can now visit his very own memorial in the park.
When hungry, you will be amazed at the outstanding quality of food you can get at this beach. Of course, dining here is not cheap, but the location, the views and the atmosphere are all a good excuse for enjoying a relaxing lunch here, for example at the Bathers’ Pavilion or at the Balmoral Boatshed.
But instead of dining here we just go for a stroll, enjoying the warm winter sun on this lovely Sydney winter’s day. We feel so blessed in this moment, such a beautiful place just a couple of minutes from home.
