Imagine waking up to a golden rising sun every morning. As the soft warm light touches your face, shaking off the dream residue from your sleepy mind, your eyes fall on the islands in the distance that now shape up in dark silhouettes on the horizon. The air is heavy with the scents of the tropics – salt, smoke, fragrant flowers.
You can hear some birds chirping a hesitant morning song, maybe even the water lapping gently against the shore. The temperature is perfect, a balmy breeze carresses your face. You get out of bed, just three steps away is the wide balcony overlooking the bay and the gardens of your private villa. Welcome to another day in Fiji paradise!
My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at the luxurious private oceanfront villa Starfish Blue in Fiji’s marvellous Suncoast. Located around 2.5hrs from Nadi International Airport it is just remote enough to enjoy the privacy of a stand-alone villa, but at the same time not lacking any of the luxuries that you need for a relaxing holiday in a home away from home.
The property is right on the waterfront, from the garden it is only a couple of steps across the pebbly black beach until your toes touch the warm South Pacific, perfect for a spontaneous swim or a snorkelling adventure.
I just love snorkelling – it is so removed from time and space – once you get the hang of it, all you need to do is lie calmly on the surface, breathe in and out through your mouth and watch the colourful fish and bizarre corals underneath you. With every turn there are new surprises awaiting you, and there are always new fishes to discover!
The garden itself is marvellous – you will find the best of the tropics in this one place – bright red hibiscus, fruit-bearing bananas, lots and lots of coconut, fragrant frangipani. It is a pleasure to just dream away in the shade of the hanging bed, taking in the scents and the sights of the garden and the sea.
The light is ever changing with the time of day, it never gets boring. From the glorious sunrise to sunset, the islands on the horizon change their colours, as little boats are passing by and the tide comes in and then turns again.
The villa has everything you could ask for – three generously sized bedrooms, all en-suite and air-conditioned, with the master bedroom on the second floor enjoying the best views of the surroundings. The master bedroom also has the added luxuries of a spa bath, TV and DVD player.
The kitchen at Starfish Blue is fully equipped, although we find we make very little use of it. The two lovely maids visit us every morning to make up the rooms, and they also cook us a tropical breakfast of eggs, toast, fresh juice and tropical fruit.
In the evening we dine out (although the maids would be available to cook and clean up at dinner time too, if that’s what you prefer). There are two resorts in the vicinity, and while the closer one is not accepting dinner guests due to a private function during our stay, the manager of our villa organises a taxi service to take us to the other resort for a couple of cocktails, kokoda (a local dish made of fresh fish cooked in lemon juice, served in coconut milk and with crunchy capsicum and other vegetables – so good, you need to try it!), and a delicious chicken curry. You may be remote and far away from everyday sorrows but at Starfish Blue it’s no problem to eat like a royal.
Our long weekend away was relaxing and in the short time that we had there we made the most out of our Fiji stay. The friendly local management and staff were extremely helpful in ensuring that we had everything we could wish for right at our fingertips.
