You know I love my city. But sometimes I do have a look at what’s going on in Australia’s other exciting city, Melbourne.

As you all know, Melbourne is king when it comes to romantic laneway dining and eclectic restaurants that are serving the most innovative dishes. We Sydneysiders really can get quite jealous when thinking about the wonderful places that Melbournians can enjoy on the weekends.

The Melbourne culinary scene always has something new and exciting to explore. From the laneways to underground bars, and with the wine country just 45 minutes away, this city reigns supreme when it comes to food and drink. After all, Melbourne has been voted the World’s Most Liveable City six times in a row!

So if you are planning a trip down to Melbourne in the near future, check out these exciting new venues. Not just do they serve up delicious new food creations and innovative drinks, with their modern and creative interiors they are also a feast for the eyes.

Joylati in Chapel Street precinct: artisanal flavours of Melbourne’s new ice cream haven

Founded by Italian duo Cristina and Fabrizo, Joylati opened in the city’s iconic Chapel Street precinct this year.

With mint chocolate tones, Herringbone pavement tiles and chalky timbers, this throwback to true Italian artistry is next to rule the Instagram roost for not only its scoops. A delicious paint palette and ‘chocolate-dipped’ features give the space a mouthwatering feel before the first scoop, complete with a chocolate cascade fountain and giant painted gelato mural.

Try: Hazelnut gelato with hazelnuts directly imported from Piedmont.

JoylatiBringing back brewing: Melbourne’s new stomping ground in Collingwood

Stomping Ground Brewery Co. offers a spot to enjoy all that is good about the beloved brew in clever surroundings unlike anything experienced before. With a design inspired by the industrial revolution and working-class steampunk elements of the 1920’s, the STUDIO Y team’s massive conversion of this vast Collingwood warehouse has created a space far from your usual brewery or pub.

Beautifully injected with vintage-industrial finishes, with brass, timber and black iron features, together with natural materials, terracotta and patina colour palettes, the venue is complete with braziers and a retractable roof.

Try: Home-brewed Bearbrass milk stout comes without milk but is nice and smooth and dark.

Flavour infusion in St Kilda: United Kitchen Dining & Tapas

This St Kilda newcomer puts a focus on relaxed drinking and dining, with fresh, authentic flavours and twists on classic cocktails, making it a welcome addition to Fitzroy Street’s buzzing strip.

Staying true to a menu that’s driven by local, seasonal produce, design innovators STUDIO Y created an interior that utilises natural, organic elements and materials; think concrete flooring, rust-coloured walls  and wooden trimmings. The stunning fusion venue – that serves Latin-American inspired and Spanish infused with Asian-influenced cuisine – also brings the outside in with a striking ‘living’ ceiling.

Try: Hard to pick from the great choice of dishes, but the peanut butter spring rolls really need to be part of your order.
